The research group Biochemical Genetics at the Institute of Human Genetics invites highly skilled and motivated researchers to apply as:

University Assistant (PhD position) Third-party funded, as FWF doctoral candidate, 75 %

Research Focus
We are highly interested in the molecular basis of inherited metabolic diseases and the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Our current main focus is on complex lipid metabolic processes that shape mitochondrial membranes and their cellular functions. We have developed specialized mass-spectrometry based methods that allow us to carry out comprehensive quantitative lipidome analyses, and found computational strategies to link the results to cellular metabolism. In the current PhD project, we will examine the interdependency and regulatory potential of mitochondrial membrane lipid states and environmental factors that shape central carbon metabolism. For background information, we recommend reading the following manuscripts: Oemer and Koch et al. 2020 (10.1016/j.celrep.2020.02.115), Oemer et al. 2018 (10.1073/pnas.1719407115), and Oemer et al. 2020 (10.1101/2020.02.10.937433).

Your Profile
We encourage the application of PhD candidates with an experimental-analytical background. You should:
         i.  hold a MSc or Diploma degree or equivalent in basic sciences
ii.  have documented productivity in form of e.g. published research, excellent grades, internships,
iii.  have a interest in mitochondrial physiology and systematic multi-omics experiments, and
iv.  be motivated to collaborate in our young and dynamic research team.
Experimental skills in Cell Biology and Biochemistry and/or prior coding experience are advantageous.
